Sex & Candy Floss

This time, when Mol takes me home, she doesn’t leave me. She doesn’t let go of my hand until she has sat me down on my bed and made me look her in the eye.

“You are coming back with me.”

I want to, but I shouldn’t. “I don’t belong in your realm.”

“You belong with me.” She draws her cool fingers over my cheek. “I’ve fought for too long against the light you have shined in my darkness. Please don’t make me go back to the way things were.”

I stare at her, because… she can’t mean what I think she means.

“Will you come back with me where I can keep you safe?”

I should say no. This was only ever about my memories. “Yes.”

“You won’t need anything… but if there is something you cherish that you do not want to leave in this realm, unprotected, you can bring it.” Her pink gaze turns to my closed door. “And you must tell the old cat that you’re going.”

“Why?”

“Because Lako will come looking for you if Tabitha asks it of her.”

“Tabi—” I shake my head. There’s no point in asking how Mol knew my friend’s full name, when I didn’t.

I pack my things first.

Those few things I brought with me from Cupid’s nunnery, the box I can’t open without the memories I don’t have, my favourite sweater… it seems silly to take any of these things.

But I zip the bag anyway, and slide it under my bed.

Taking a deep breath, I open the door to the rest of the apartment and poke my head out.

Bee is curled up on the couch, glaring at the TV and muttering imprecations about fondant.

“Hey Bee?”

She looks up and her smile brightens. “I didn’t realise you were home.”

“I wasn’t.” I’m not going to tell her about the drugs. She’ll only fuss. “I’m going to hang out in the old gods’ realm for a little while. I just didn’t want you to worry.”

Sitting up, Bee lets the blanket slide off her. “Is she here with you now?”

Bee looks at where Mol stands… but her gaze passes right through her.

“Once they get their wisdom teeth, they have to be devoted to me to even hear me.” She watches Bee for a moment. “There are exceptions, but she is not one of them.

“Yes, she’s here,” I say.

“Do you promise me you want to go with her?”

I don’t tell her she’s being silly to worry. I’m the one who’s being silly. I should probably be twice as worried as she is.

“Yes. This is the right choice for me.” Because worry aside, I do want to go with Mol. I want to be tangled up in her web.

I want her to be my undoing.

“I trust that you know what you’re doing. Even if I don’t.”

Mol lets me slip my hand from hers and cross the room to Bee. When I hug her, she squeezes me tight and whispers. “Seriously. Say the word and I will find a way to get you out of this.
